There are many ways to spend a vacation away from the intensity of the work environment. Dr. Chris Aleman, a dermatologist from Richmond, Virginia decided not to spend his time on the sunny beach shores.  Instead, he wanted to spend his vacation sharing his knowledge, expertise and experience to help patients with all types of dermatologic conditions in Bolivia who would have never been able to afford a dermatology consultation, much less from a highly trained expert from overseas. At HOPE we fondly call this kind of vacation “voluntourism.”

Hospital Arco Iris (HAI) welcomes his expertise as he volunteers for two weeks by teaching and giving presentations on skin cancer and community acquired infections, current dermatological techniques and working with the dermatology department at Hospital Arco Iris in La Paz and our colleagues in a rural Hospital in Coroico, Bolivia.

Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.

We thank Dr.Aleman, and other healthcare professionals and volunteers like him, for their passion to use their knowledge, talents and time to serve and change the lives of others.   Thank you.
