Hospital Arco Iris (HAI) is proud to announce the development of the first pediatric colorectal specialty center in Bolivia. Through a partnership of the renowned pediatric colorectal surgeon, Dr. Edwin Dolz and Hospital Arco Iris, a center of excellence is born. HOPE worldwide Bolivia (Hww-Bolivia) is honored to provide strong support for this program.
Healthcare for children in Bolivia is a life-threatening challenge, especially children who are impoverished or live in rural areas. Colorectal diseases and disorders are frequent occurrences in this age group and often place the child’s life at risk or threaten seriously alter their quality of life throughout their life. This is especially true if these disorders are not treated in a proper and expedient manner. Bolivia has a population of over 12 million and a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000. Colorectal diseases that affect this population include congenital anorectal disorders, Hirshsprung’s disease, incontinence, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic constipation. These disorders affect over 1.5 million children.
Dr. Dolz, in partnership with HAI and with support from Hww-Bolivia, is creating a team of healthcare providers including physician specialists, nurses, nutritionists and healthcare educators to provide compassionate and technically excellent care for these children. This National Pediatric Colorectal Center will offer the most appropriate medical and surgical treatment to each child according to international evidence-based medicine standards – offering the first of this kind of service to Bolivia. Once again this demonstrates the power of partnerships.
