The Joy of Giving, “It is more Blessed to Give than to Receive”

By: Kevin Broyles

Occasionally God allows us opportunities to experience the full joy of giving to others – this event was one of those times. Foundation Arco Iris chose 20 of the poorest families of the 120 families they support. These families are the poorest of the poor – many of them do not have running water, electricity or adequate homes. They don’t have food, clothing or certainly not enough money for Christmas gifts for their children. We were able to provide “víveres” (which means life giving food – rice, beans, sugar, salt, oil), wrapped gifts for each family member, and clothing.

We were overwhelmed with the generosity of those who donated clothing; including USAID, the American Embassy and several of our friends within the community. There was enough clothing donated to actually provide something for all 120 families! We were overjoyed ourselves to be able to provide to those who truly are in need. The tears of gratitude of the families were matched by our tears of gratitude for how we’ve been blessed and also for this opportunity to give in such a needed and special way.

The most poignant statement made by one of the young mothers was her sharing of gratitude and prayer request that God would bless us.  From her poverty and gratitude she was praying that we would be blessed – wow! We all believe that her prayer had already been answered.
